Herbal Remedies for Arteriovenous Malformation

Arteriovenous malformation

ABOUT ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION (AVM)

AVM is an unusual connection between arteries and veins. It is also considered as a fault in the blood vessels of cardiac or respiratory system. Arteriovenous malformation is a combination of two words. "Arteriovenous" means channel between arteries and veins and "malformation" means abnormality formed in any part of the body.

Nature of arteries is to carry blood containing oxygen from the heart to the brain, and veins carry blood with less oxygen from the brain and back to the heart. When one suffers from arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in that case clusters of blood vessels in the brain or on its surface bypass the normal brain tissue and directly diverts blood from the arteries to the veins. Malformation is said to arise during fetal development or soon after birth. Males and females are similarly affected with AVM. AVMs are asymptomatic which results in intense pain or bleeding or lead to other serious medical problems.

SYMPTOMS OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION

The symptoms of AVM vary as it can develop in any part of the body and the size of the blood vessels are also involved. AVM can begin anywhere in various body parts but are most commonly present in the brain & spinal cord.

  • Numbness or tingling sensation in any side of the body.

COMPLICATIONS OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION

  • Bleeding in the brain (hemorrhage): As AVM puts too much of pressure on the walls of the affected arteries and veins, they result in the AVM cracking and bleeding into the brain (a hemorrhage).
  • Reduced oxygen to brain tissue: In case of AVM, blood rushes quickly through the different paths as it is not slowed down by the channels of smaller blood vessels. As a result, brain tissues can't easily absorb oxygen from the fast-flowing blood because of AVM. The brain tissues without enough oxygen, get weak or can even die.
  • Thin or weak blood vessels: As AVM puts extreme pressure on the thin and weak walls of the blood vessels, a lump in the blood vessel wall may develop and become vulnerable to rupture.
  • Brain damage:  As you grow, your body may recruit more arteries to supply blood to the fast-flowing AVM. As a result, some AVMs may get bigger and displace or compress portions of the brain. This may prevent protective fluids from flowing freely around the hemispheres of the brain.

DIAGNOSE OF ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION

Various types of tests are performed for the diagnosis of AVM:

  • CT scan: This test produces detailed images from inside the body.
  • MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging produces images of the affected blood vessels in the brain.
  • MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiogram): It produces images of the blood vessels.
  • Angiography: Angiography visualizes the blood vessels around the head and neck.
