Ayurvedic Treatment of Sjogren's Syndrome

Sjogren’s Syndrome

About Sjogren's Syndrome

Sjogren's syndrome is an immune system disorder which is characterised by dryness of eyes and mouth/lips, as it basically affects the mucous membranes and moisture-secreting glands of the eyes and mouth.

Like all other immune system disorders (or autoimmune disorders), Sjogren's syndrome is also a result of the extra antibodies which are produced abnormally in the blood and are directed against different tissues of the body; thereby leading to inflammation. In this condition, the misdirected immune system in autoimmunity causes the inflammation and dysfunction of the lacrimal glands (the glands responsible for producing tears) and the salivary glands (the glands responsible for producing saliva in the mouth).

Since Sjogren's syndrome affects lacrimal glands and salivary glands, it causes dryness of eyes due to decreased production of tears; and dryness of mouth/lips because of decreased production of saliva. After initially affecting the lacrimal and salivary glands, Sjogren's syndrome can gradually affect some other parts of the body as well, including liver, kidneys, thyroid, lungs, skin, nerves and joints.

The exact cause of Sjogren's syndrome is not known. However, doctors widely believe that the condition is mainly caused by inherited (genetic) factors, or a combination of genetic and environmental factors. On the basis of how it occurs, Sjogren's syndrome is classified into two categories: Primary Sjogren's Syndrome, which is a condition that develops on its own and does not result from any other disorder; and Secondary Sjogren's Syndrome which develops as a result of other conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

Sjogren's syndrome can affect people of all age-groups; though it more commonly occurs in adults above 40 years of age. Moreover, women are at a higher risk of developing this condition as compared to men.
