Ayurvedic Treatment of Neurofibromatosis Syndrome

Neurofibromatosis Syndrome

About Neurofibromatosis Syndrome

Neurofibromatosis syndrome is a genetic disorder which causes tumors to form on the nerve tissue. These tumors can develop anywhere i.e. in the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These tumors are usually benign (non-cancerous) but sometimes can become cancerous (malignant). Symptoms of neurofibromatosis are often mild.

Types of Neurofibromatosis Syndrome

There are 3 types of neurofibromatosis each with different signs and symptoms.

1. Neurofibromatosis 1

Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF 1) usually appears in childhood. Signs are often evident at birth or almost by the age of 10.

Signs and symptoms of NF 1 include:

  • Flat and light brown spots on the skin: These are harmless spots which are found commonly in many people. These are usually present at the time of birth or appear during the first years of life and then stabilise.
  • Soft bumps on or under the skin (neurofibromas): These are benign tumors which are usually develop in or under the skin but can also grow inside the body. Sometimes, this type of growth may involve multiple nerves (plexiform neurofibroma).
  • Freckling in the armpits or in the groin area: This kind of freckling usually appears between the age group of 3-5.
  • Tiny bumps on the iris of the eye: These are harmless nodules which can't be easily seen by the naked eye and don't affect the vision.
  • Tumor of the optic nerve: This kind of tumor usually appears by the age 3, rarely in late childhood but never seen in adults.
  • Larger than average head size: Children suffering from NF 1 tend to have larger average head size due to increased brain volume.
  • Learning disabilities: Impaired thinking skills are common in children suffering from NF1 but these symptoms are usually mild.

2. Neurofibromatosis 2

Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF 2) is not common. The signs and symptoms of NF2 usually result from the development of benign, slow growing tumors in both the ears. This condition is also known as vestibular schwannomas as these tumors grow on the nerve that carries sound and balance the information from the inner ear to the brain.

The signs and symptoms of NF2 usually appear in the early adult years and can vary in severity.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Numbness or weakness in the arms or legs
  • Difficulty in balancing
  • Facial drop
  • Vision problems like the development of cataracts
  • Pain

3. Schwannomatosis

It is a rare type of neurofibromatosis that usually affects people not in the childhood but after the age of 20 years. In Schwannomatosis, tumors develop on cranial (skull), peripheral or spinal nerves but it does not involve the nerve that is responsible for carrying sound and balance information from the inner ear to the brain. The tumors doesn't grow on both the hearing nerves so schwannomatosis doesn't cause the hearing loss which is experienced by NF2 patients.

Signs and symtoms of Schwannomatosis include:

  • Loss of muscle
  • Numbness or weakness in various parts of the body.

Causes of Neurofibromatosis Syndrome

Neurofibromatosis is caused by the genetic defects that are hereditary.

Diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis Syndrome

NF1 can be diagnosed by physical examination. A physical examination as well as family history is important for the diagnosis of NF2.
