AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF CHRONIC IMMUNE DEMYELINATING POLYNEUROPATHY (CIDP)

ABOUT CHRONIC IMMUNE DEMYELINATING POLYNEUROPATHY (CIDP)

Chronic Immune Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) also called chronic relapsing polyneuropathy is a rare neurological disorder wherein the nerves get weak, numb and painful. It is characterized by impaired sensory function in the legs and arms. CIDP is caused by the damage to the myelin sheath (the covering that protects nerve fibers). There is inflammation of nerve roots and peripheral nerves which effects how fast the nerve signals are transmitted and further leads to loss of nerve fibers.

Chronic Immune Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, CIDP

CIDP is considered to be the chronic counterpart of Guillain Barre Syndrome. It may lead to peripheral neuropathy, damaging the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord.

CIDP is more common in men than women. It happens usually in older age. It is an autoimmune disorder.

According to Ayurveda, CIDP is a condition correlated with Vata energy affecting all the parts of the body and the problem is associated with deprived growth of the body tissues.

SYMPTOMS OF CIDP

  • The symptoms of CIDP progress slowly causing symmetric weakness of muscles around the hip, shoulders, hands and feet. The doctors wait at least 8 weeks to confirm CIDP in patients.
  • Sensory symptoms like tingling, prickling sensations or numbness in toes and fingers, there is incoordination as a result of abnormal sensations.
  • There is loss of reflexes, weakness of arms and legs, paralysis, clumsiness or abnormal walking and difficulty in walking or foot drop.
  • Deep tendon reflexes are reduced or get absent
  • Fatigue and difficulty in breathing
  • Difficulty in swallowing and facial weakness
  • Double vision
  • There is usually a preceding infection as a symptom in most cases.
  • Autonomic dysfunction may be present along with other symptoms. This includes giddiness, bladder and bowel dysfunction and cardiac problems.
  • Some people experience permanent nerve loss while for others the problem has period of remission.

DIAGNOSES OF CIDP

  • The diagnose of CIDP is based on the combination of medical history of the patient, physical exam and some tests like nerve conduction studies, needle EMGs and spinal fluid examination.
  • Blood and urine tests are also conducted to rule out other neuropathic disorders.

TREATMENT OF CIDP

Treatment options also include physiotherapy to improve muscle strength and mobility. It helps in minimizing the shrinkage of muscles and tendons and also helps with fixing the distortion of joints. Active lifestyle is encouraged in this problem.

The modern management uses steroids, cortisones to reduce inflammation, plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobin treatment methods.

According to Ayurveda, the treatment of CIDP focuses on balancing the aggravated doshas in the body and maintaining the overall health of the patient. The herbal medicines used for the treatment are the ones that have specific action on the nerve cells and on the entire nervous system.
