Ayurvedic Treatment of Behcet's disease

Behcet's disease

About Behcet's disease

Behcet's disease -- also known as Behcet's syndrome -- is a rare vascular disorder in which the blood vessels in the blood get inflamed. This disorder can cause problems in different parts of the body, including mouth, eyes, genitals, skin, joints, brain, digestive system, and vascular system.

It is a non-contagious, autoimmune condition which results from a mistaken attack by the body's immune system on the blood vessels. There are three main indications of this disease: (i) canker sores or mouth ulcers; (ii) genital ulcers; and (iii) inflammation of the uvea (the area around the pupil of the eye). In some cases, Behcet's disease can lead to other health complications like skin problems, arthritis, and inflammation of digestive tract, spinal cord, and brain.

Behcet's disease can affect men and women of all age-groups, and even children. However, adults in their 20s and 30s, especially men, are at the highest risk of this condition.

Causes of Behcet's disease

The exact cause of Behcet's disease is not yet known. Nonetheless, certain factors which can trigger the development of this condition are:

  • Genetic (inherited) factors
  • Environmental factors
  • Viral factors
  • Bacterial factors

Meanwhile, so far as Ayurveda is concerned, Ayurvedic experts opine that Behcet's disease is caused by an imbalance of the 'Pitta' dosha in the body.

Symptoms of Behcet's disease

The most common symptom of Behcet's disease is recurrent oral ulcers (sores in the mouth), which usually appear on the tongue, lips, buccal mucosa, tonsils, gingiva, pharynx, uvula, or palate. In addition to oral ulcers, some of the other symptoms of Behcet's disease are:

  • Swelling, pain or redness in arms/legs (due to inflammation of blood vessels)
  • Sores on the sex organs (genital ulcers)
  • Other skin sores
  • Inflammation in the eye
  • Pain and swelling in knee joints
  • Inflammation in the brain and nervous system

Diagnosis of Behcet's disease

Since there are a number of symptoms which can be considered a potential indication of Behcet's disease, the diagnosis of this condition is largely based on the symptoms present in individual patients. Some of the tests which are carried out to diagnose Behcet's disease are:

  • Pathergy test (a special skin test)
  • Skin biopsy
  • Bowel tests
  • Lumbar puncture
  • MRI of the brain

Treatment of Behcet's disease

The treatment of Behcet's disease chiefly involves the management of the different symptoms of the condition as well as prevention of serious health complications. Basically, the line of treatment followed for individual patient is based on the severity of this disorder and the body parts on which it is manifested.
