ABOUT ACOUSTIC NEUROMA

Acoustic Neuroma or acoustic neurinoma or acoustic neurilemoma is also known as vestibular schwannoma. It is a benign, non-cancerous, slow growing tumor which is formed on the main or vestibular nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. The nerves are responsible for balance and hearing. The tumor is the result of over production of schwann cells which normally wraps around the nerve fibers to help support and insulate nerves. Acoustic Neuroma is a rare tumor often affecting middle ages people. More women are affected than men.

TYPES OF ACOUSTIC NEUROMA:-

1. The unilateral acoustic neuromas affects only one ear. They are not genetic.
2. The bilateral acoustic neuromas affects both ears and are considered to be inherited. The genetic problem called neurofibromatosis-2 is responsible for this.

People who are exposed to continuous loud noise and the ones who are exposed to neck or face radiation usually develops acoustic neuroma in later years of life. Prolonged usage of cell phones is also one of the cause of developing Acoustic Neuroma.

SYMPTOMS OF ACOUSTIC NEUROMA

• Symptoms of acoustic neuroma depends on size and growth of the tumor.
• The pressure from an acoustic neuroma leads to hearing loss which may be one sided or ringing sound in the ear (tinnitus) on the side of the tumor, dizziness (vertigo) and unsteadiness.
• The problem may lead to facial numbness, tingling or facial weakness and even paralysis of face.
• Patients may feel feeling of fullness in the ear.
• Headaches, confusion and walking clumsily. Some even experience taste changes, difficulty in swallowing food and hoarseness in voice. Vomiting is also a known symptom in this problem.
• Large tumors can press on the brainstem thereby preventing the normal flow of fluid between the brain and spinal cord.

DIAGNOSES OF ACOUSTIC NEUROMA

• A complete physical exam is conducted along with medical history of the patient is taken to diagnose the problem.
• Neurological exam is done. Other tests performed are Audiogram, MRI, CT scan, ENG or electronystagmography and ABR or Auditory Brainstem Response.
• The tests are helpful in determining the location and size of the tumor.

TREATMENT OF ACOUSTIC NEUROMA

Treatment options include watching and waiting for symptoms and tumor to go away, surgery and radiation.
