Effective Ayurvedic Treatment For Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the mucous membrane covering the white of the eyes and the inner side of the eyelids. It may start in one eye and spread to the other eye after a day or two. Conjunctivitis is also known as 'pinkeye' which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Pinkeye is a serious problem and it makes the eyes extremely red. It can spread rapidly and causes no long-term eye or vision damage. Conjunctivitis or pinkeye can be caused by bacteria, viruses responsible for colds, allergies etc. Triggers of allergic conjunctivitis include grass, pollen grains, animal dander and dust mites. Some chemicals in the environment can irritate the eyes and cause pinkeye. It has been observed that pinkeye caused by some bacteria and viruses can spread easily from person to person. It is not a serious health risk if diagnosed promptly.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis may include redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid, increased amount of tears, thick yellow discharge forming crusts over the eyelashes, itchy and burning eyes, blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. The concerned doctor will conduct an examination of the eyes and identify the bacteria or viruses that may have caused conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria is treated with antibiotics. Eye drops or ointments may be applied to the inside of the eyelid 3-4 times a day for a week or more. Antibiotic drugs may need to be taken internally for several days. Viral conjunctivitis can be highly contagious. It is advised to avoid contact with other people and wash hands frequently. If conjunctivitis is caused by acid or alkaline material such as bleach, immediately rinse the eyes with lots of fresh water. Allergy-associated conjunctivitis normally improves, once the allergy is treated with the help of proper medication.

Some physicians recommend specific foods that strengthen the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables will help the body recover from conjunctivitis more quickly. Both vitamin E and zinc are reported to support the immune system, while Vitamin A specifically guards against viral infections. But the problems associated with prolonged use of antibiotics and their relative ineffectiveness in majority of cases, has led to a reconsideration of the use of natural herbs for the treatment of conjunctivitis.

The herbal medicines can cure the eye infections due to viral causes and antibiotics can only cure bacterial infections. Daily dosages of natural herbs can be taken for red eyes, enhance vision, night blindness, itchy eyes and conjunctivitis. Herbal remedies offer a harmless way to treat the symptoms of conjunctivitis. In Ayurveda, there are several herbs that can be helpful in treating this condition. For more effective results, ayurvedic physicians recommend that the medicinal herbs should be used both externally and internally.

Natural herbal remedies for conjunctivitis are not meant to replace existing medical care. Natural herbal treatments may be helpful when used in addition to the conventional method of treatment. Most patients are becoming more inclined towards herbal treatments, as there are no side-effects when natural herbal remedies are used as directed by the physician.
