Bronchitis - Herbal Remedies for Bronchitis & Allergy TreatmentBronchitis is inflammation of the main air passages to the lungs. Bronchitis may be acute or chronic and it remains for a long time and often recurs. Acute bronchitis generally follows a viral respiratory infection. On the other hand, chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition. People have persistent cough that produces excessive mucus. Chronic bronchitis is most commonly caused by continuous cigarette smoking. It can also be the result of continuous attacks of acute bronchitis. People at increased risk of getting bronchitis include smokers, exposure to secondhand smoke, weak immune systems, old age and those who are exposed to irritants at work such as chemical fumes from ammonia, chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide etc. Continuous coughing causes discomfort and damage to the lungs and airways. Symptoms for bronchitis include inflammation or swelling of the bronchi, coughing, production of white mucus, breath shortness, wheezing, fatigueness, fever, chest pain and blocked or runny nose. Long-term inflammation of chronic bronchitis leads to scarring of the bronchial tubes and airways, which ultimately leads to production of excessive mucus. Additional symptoms of bronchitis include frequent respiratory infections and a cough that is worse in the mornings. There are several tests that are used to diagnose bronchitis, in addition to an examination of family and personal medical histories. If a doctor hears wheezing sounds when listening to lungs with a stethoscope, he will further order chest X-rays. Patients suffering from bronchitis are usually instructed to take rest, drink plenty of fluids, breath warm and moist air, and take cough suppressants and pain relievers in order to manage symptoms and ease breathing. The patient will be supervised and asked to avoid smoking, use a humidifier or cold-air face masks and practice pursed-lip breathing. It is normally caused by the onset of some type of inflammation in the bronchial tubes, which are the air passages that lead to the lungs. The inflamed bronchial tubes swell and thicken which makes the tiny hairs that operate as filters in the tubes become paralyzed. Additionally, the inflammation brings on thick mucus and very often a wheezing cough. One normally feels some difficulty in breathing and there is a constant urge to cough out the mucus. A single episode of bronchitis which may resolve within less than one month. If there is an underlying cause of lowered immunity, tendency to catch infection or if there are factors such as smoking and environmental pollution; there may be a tendency to have recurrent bronchitis. Those patients who have low immunity and are exposed to factors such as smoking, pollutants etc. may present with chronic bronchitis.
