What is Amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is a very rare disease that occurs when amyloid, a substance/protein builds up in body organs. Different body organs get defected by this condition and usually involve kidney, heart, liver, spleen, tongue, brain etc.

Various causes and types of Amyloiodosis

Causes of amyloidosis depend upon the types it has. There are different types of amyloidosis:

1. Primary amyloidosis (Systemic AL)

This type of amyloidosis is seen in patients with blood cancer or multiple myeloma which is a most common type. Here whole body is involved and organs affected are liver, intestines, kidneys, heart and nerves too.

AL stands for "amyloid light chains," which is the type of protein responsible for this type of amyloidosis.

2. Secondary amyloidosis (Systemic AA)

Secondary amyloidosis is the result of another chronic inflammatory disease, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease and cancers. It most commonly affects spleen, kidneys, liver, adrenal gland, and lymph nodes.

AA means the amyloid type A protein causes this type of amyloidosis.

3. Dialysis related amyloidosis (DRA)

A common type which is seen mostly in older people who are on dialysis from 4 to 5 years. Bone joints and tendons are the common part affected. Beta-2 microglobulin builds up in the blood here.

4. Hereditary

A rare type which runs in families.

5. Senile Systemic Amyloidosis (SSA)

It occurs most commonly in older men and heart, some tissues are involved.

6. Organ-Specific Amyloidosis

Here deposits of amyloid protein is present in single organs, including the skin - cutaneous amyloidosis.
