About Intussusception

Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children younger than 3 years. Though rare in adults, this condition is the result of an underlying medical condition such as tumor.

Intussusception is a condition in which a part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. This condition often leads to the blockage of the food or fluid from passing through. It cuts off the blood supply to the part of the affected intestine which leads to a tear or scar in the bowel, infection as well as death of the bowel tissue.

Symptoms of Intussusception

In Children:-

The first sign of intussusception in a healthy children may be a sudden and loud crying caused due to an abdominal pain. The pain usually comes and goes. These painful episodes last longer and happen more often as the time passes.

In Infants:-

• Stool mixed with blood and mucus.
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Diarrhoea
• A lump in the abdomen
• Fever

In Adults:-

Intussusception is rare in adults and the symptoms of this disorder may overlap with the symptoms of other disorders. The most common symptom of intussusception is the abdominal pain that comes and go. Nausea and vomiting are the other symptoms.

Causes of Intussusception

The intestine is shaped like a long tube. In intussusception, one part of the intestine, small intestine slides inside an adjacent part. This condition is known as telescoping. In some cases, it is also caused by an abnormal growth in the intestines such as a tumor or polyp.

In adults, the intussusception is usually the result of a medical condition like:

• A polyp or a tumor
• Weight-loss surgery or other surgery of the intestinal tract
• Inflammation due to diseases such as Crohn's disease
• Scar like tissue in the intestine (adhesions)

Complications of Intussusception

Intussusception can cause complication such as cutting off the blood supply to the affected portion of the intestine. If not diagnosed and treated early, lack of blood causes tissue of the intestinal wall to die. Therefore, tissue death will lead to a tear in the intestinal wall, which results in infection of the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis).

Diagnosis of Intussusception

Intussusception may be diagnosed by ultrasound or other abdominal imaging.

Modern treatment considers it as a medical emergency to avoid severe dehydration and shock, as well as to prevent the infections that can occur when a portion of the intestine dies due to lack of blood.

According to Ayurvedic concept, obstruction is due to the upward or backward or reverse movement of Vata disorder. Master Sushruta explains that complete obstruction of Vata in its pathway and dryness of minute channels leads to the backward course of Vata dosha.
